As a Registered Dietitian (RD), when working with someone one-on-one, I perform assessment and counseling in health promotion and disease prevention. My clients often need guidance with common conditions such as obesity/overweight, hypertension, diabetes and gastrointestinal disorders. When necessary, I evaluate labs and pharmacological, drug/nutrient, herbal interactions and provide relevant diet/drug nutrition education.
As your nutrition motivation and wellness coach, we discuss your health at baseline as well as your goals. In addition, although it may not be obvious, your lifestyle sectors play a huge role in the quality of your nutrition, health and well-being. When I ask, “what is on your plate today?” the focus is twofold. I am not only asking what you are eating but I am also asking you to focus on your external environment; fitness, stress management, relationships, career, finances, and connection to something greater. These areas are all intertwined with food and the choices we make. In other words, what’s happening in your life sectors affects the type of nutrition you will choose on a daily basis. It is important to understand the driving force behind your food decisions as they are a direct result of what you are experiencing in your life. If one of these sectors is out of alignment with your well-being, it is most likely other areas are also causing an imbalance with your health. When you’re out of balance, you make poor decisions. And then it is most likely you will choose unhealthy food options that do not nourish your body and will lead to overall poor nutrition status.
Remember, the steps to plate your table properly in order to nourish your body with the right nutrients takes time, effort and thought. It takes time to shop for healthy food options, prepare them, eat in a non-stressed environment without distractions and pay attention to all the senses you are experiencing when you eat your food such as smell, taste and touch.
I teach my clients techniques to achieve habit change and show them how to employ new skills in a fun, safe environment. It is my intention and hope that at the end of the program, clients will reach their destination, and have tackled a chunk of diet and lifestyle habit change they needed to in order to arrive at a new baseline from where they began.
